90s Hair Makes a Comeback

Hair trends to look out for in 2018

The 1990's are making a comeback in a big way in the fashion world, and in the beauty industry too.  Check out this years biggest hair trend predictions that are clearly inspired by some of our favorite looks from the 1990's.

High Ponytails

Hello Salt N Peppa and Gwen Stefani, here's a nod to you.  This year the high and tight ponytails, and half ponytails are back and looking more modern than ever.

Slicked back and shiny locks pulled up to the top crown of the head give a very youthful vibe that can be a sexy look for day or dressed up for night.

Get the extra lift by wrapping a piece of hair or hair textured elastic around the pony to get the full effect.

Ariana Grande loves to rock the high pony look and matches it perfectly with her retro bombshell inspired cat eye and nude lip.

She gives off a sexy James Bond film vibe that is perfectly on point.

Rihanna is always on trend with her hair and makeup, and her version of the high pony is well suited to her flirty, youthful and edgy personality and style.

Paired with a bright berry lip and soft eye makeup, Rihanna has nailed one of the top trends for Spring this year.

Andra Day was looking fierce at the Oscars last weekend with her super volume, high ponytail adorned with pretty flower barrettes.

The delicate flowers are the perfect accessory to add extra elegance and dimension to her style.

Longer Pixie Cuts

Michelle Williams looks gorgeous with this A-symetrical pixie cut.  Okay, we all remember Meg Ryan in the 90's. She pretty much became a style icon based on her cropped pixie cut.  We are seeing pixie cuts making a big comeback over the last few years.

What's new this year is that we are seeing a trend towards longer, more flirty looking pixie cuts with deep side parts and A-symmetrical lines that give them an altogether more contemporary feel.

You'd be surprised how many people can pull off a pixie cut that is the right length for your face shape.

Mary J. Blige had a gorgeous pixie cut at the Oscars this year.

Her style was full of volume on top and subtle waves around her crown.  The subtle variations of low lights and bright blonde color on top blended in beautifully with her skin tone and added a perfect frame around her face.

This is a cut and color that will be requested often in salons this year.

Scarlett Johansson recently showed off her edgy pixie cut at the Oscars as well.  Her style highlights another popular trend this year - the buzzed cut underneath.

The longer twirly waves on top add elegance for a night out and add a flirty feeling to her softly ombred blonde look.

Scar-Jo has been rocking her long pixie cut for a while now, and her style is perfectly on point for Spring 2018.

The Blunt Cut Bob

Another 1990's inspired haircut making a comeback is the blunt bob.  The new version of the bob is all about sleek, shiny textures and face framing bangs or center parted hairline.  This look is so cute, and is really on trend for Spring 2018.

Lily Collins has the perfect face shape for this cut, and it really highlights her bright eyes and bold brow.

The blunt bob can be loose and wavy with wispy bangs or more sleek and straight.

Either way the straight cut bob is here to stay and we are loving the cute new twists on a classic 90's style.

The New Shag: Wispy Bangs with Messy Waves & Curls

Retro inspired shag cuts are all very popular right now.  The new shag has many variations, from slick and straight, to loose waves, to full volume curls.

Most cuts feature wispy bangs that are reminiscent of the kind of low maintenance bangs that were so popular in the 90's.

Kerry Washington has the perfectly on point shag of the moment with barely there waves and uneven, whispy bangs.  Hairstylists will be getting a lot of requests for this haircut this year.

Jackie Cruz rocks the shag cut with her beautifully messy curls, and wispy uneven bangs.  You will see alot of versions of the shag cut this year, from barely sleek, to barely there waves to voluminous curls.

The shag is back in a big way, and you can expect to see women wanting this hair cut in salons everywhere.

The longer shag is a great way to keep length but add some choice style.

Dakota Johnson's shag cut is the perfect combination of modern meets retro with her messy bang and air dry texture.

The modern shag has subtle face framing layers, and a slightly A-line cut, styled with a messy, tussled look that gives off a playful, sexy vibe.

Remember those glittery double barrettes that J-Lo wore in the 90's?   Well, they are making a come back with a little more modern twist.

Here, Taylor Swift shows off her soft waves pinned back with a pair of jeweled barrettes that are the perfect accessory for that preppy, romantic look.

Barrettes have been all over the Spring runways this year.

This very girlie accessory is perfect for getting into this year's more Romantic vibe.

The double barrette look was all over the Versace Spring runway this year.

This is a style that is sure to be popular this year.  Gold, silver and tiny floral barrettes will be a key hair accessory at every formal event this year, or even just an evening out with friends for drinks.

Time to get out some barrettes and get back into that 90's hair vibe!
